Prospect Watch: Two top Padres prospects made their Triple-A debuts tonight in an otherwise uninspiring loss. Brandon Valenzuela started behind the plate. While he went 0-for-3 with a walk, he successfully threw out a would-be base-stealer. … Nabil Crismatt made the start and struck out a season-high seven batters. The former big leaguer has pitched at least five innings in three straight outings, allowing two runs each time out. In 25.2 innings since signing with the Padres organization in June, the 29-year-old Colombian has posted a 4.56 ERA. … The other high-profile debut was from lanky reliever Francis Pena. Pena reached 98 mph multiple times with his sinker in a scoreless inning of work. The 23-year-old has posted a 1.49 ERA with a 0.93 WHIP across three levels this year, his second pitching in the U.S. Given the Padres’ “super pen,” it will be tough for him to get the call this year, but he will be a name to watch in spring training next year.

Prospect Watch: Another top relief prospect made his level debut as Bradgley Rodriguez making his first appearance since joining San Antonio. The 20-year-old was brought in with two on and two out and quickly induced a grounder, but it got through Michael De La Cruz‘s glove for a run-scoring error. Rodriguez bounced right back to strike out the next batter to end the inning. The righty with triple-digit velocity has a 2.47 ERA over 47.1 innings with 55 strikeouts on the season, which he opened at Low-A Lake Elsinore. He has not allowed an earned run since June 27 and has seen only two balls put in play in three outings this month. … Romeo Sanabria also made his Double-A debut, collecting a hit and a walk and scoring a run. The top first-base prospect in the San Diego Padres system is hitting .293/.402/.455 in three stops this season. … Three of the four Missions runs scored on one swing of the bat by De La Cruz, who hit a booming bases-loaded double that brought the Missions within one. It was his first extra-base hit in two weeks and his first multi-RBI game in nearly four weeks.

Prospect Watch: Only one top 30 prospect made his TInCaps debut as Rosman Verdugo got the start at third and went 1-for-4. The 19-year-old from Baja California hit .250/.363/.407 with the Storm, including a sensational .341/.444/.537 July, which would have been more widely discussed had there not been someone named Leo batting in front of him with the Storm (more on him later). … Ethan Salas followed up Tuesday’s game-winning home run with a solid two-hit performance tonight. It was just his second multi-hit game since July 2 and the first time in two weeks that Salas has hit safely in consecutive games. On another positive note, Salas has struck out just once in six games this month. … The big hit of the night was by Nerwilian Cedeño, whose two-run home run gave the TinCaps a lead they would never give back. It was the switch-hitting infielder’s second home run in four games, a stark improvement after hitting two home runs over the previous six weeks. Cedeño has four hits in five August games, all for extra bases, giving him an .813 slugging percentage thus far this month. … Braden Nett continued a strong run on the mound, allowing just two hits over five innings of one-run work. The 22-year-old righty walked four, but still landed 49 of his 81 pitches for strikes. He’s given up just four runs on eight hits over 15.2 innings in his last three starts, racking up 17 ground ball outs in that stretch.

Prospect Watch: Phenom Leodalis De Vries led off the game with a 431 feet blast to right for his tenth homer of the season. That’s a long home run for any player of any age, and De Vries is doing it as the youngest player in full-season ball. It was his ninth home run in his last 23 games. The 17-year-old De Vries has reached double-digits for home runs and stolen bases in 66 games. … The other big hit came from 10th-round pick Jack Costello. The University of San Diego product homered in his second Cal League game and has four RBI in two games this week. Costello, 23, was one of six senior signs who agreed to a five-figure bonus from the Padres on day two of this year’s draft. … Second baseman Brandon Butterworth, appearing in his second game since the Padres selected him in the 12th round, collected a pair of hits and stole his second professional base. The 21-year-old was a key contributor to the North Carolina State Wolfpack team that went to the College World Series. … Outfielder Braedon Karpathios had three hits to extend his on-base streak to eight games. After leading the Cal League in strikeouts for most of the year, the 21-year-old has only punched out nine times in his last 15 games.
